Planning Permission for Commercial Solar Panels Installation
The government are now allowing many commercial installations to benefit from the permitted development rights. .
There are a few conditions, for example: Solar panels can not protrude more than 200mm from the roof. When installing on flat roofs as long as the height of the installation is not over 1m then this would come under permitted development.
Planning permission is required for buildings in a listed area or when panels are installed within the grounds of a listed building. Restrictions apply in Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and there are other restrictions so we will contact your local authority before the installation.

In the UK, rooftops facing south will get the most exposure to the sun. This means a south-facing roof will generate the most energy through its solar panels. But you can still benefit from solar panels facing east and west, or solar panels on a flat roof.
No, you do not require planning permission to add solar panels to your property. However, there are some rules to follow:
- Your panels can’t be installed above the highest part of your roof (excluding the chimney).
- They can’t stick out more than 20cm from the roof.
- Your solar panel system should have a minimal effect on the building’s appearance.
- If you no longer have any use for your panels (for example, if they are broken), you’ll have to take them down as soon as is reasonable.
